Introduction

Bitcoin Trading Cards is a new trading card game that is designed to help open-minded, curious people begin diving into the complex world of Bitcoin. The business takes a fun and nostalgic approach to exploring and explaining monetary policy, history, blockchain technology and the social implications of fiat currency debasement.

LOGO REDESIGN

A logo that speaks to Bitcoin as defensive technology, the heritage of the Magna Carta’s freedom-focused principles, the cypherpunk legacy and the Bitcoin network’s future facing trajectory (represented by the italicised text).

The Vision

To develop an artistic, nostalgic and fun brand that disarms open-minded people in the general public, enough for them to start their journey towards addressing uncomfortable societal truths.

1. CONCEPT

After deep diving into the business’s strategy and long-term goals, I saw the visual identity needed deeper lore and a universe behind the brand. This is because the of industry and product (gaming) and target audience, meaning all brand touch points must be/feel immersive.

I then created the concept behind the brand identity which is ‘a hidden library of ancient knowledge, containing cards that amplify each player’s power and understanding’. Finally, I then created two possible visual directions to explore and got feedback from the team.

Using the core concept, I began developing the brand identity by starting with a redesign of the logo as the stakeholders wanted the logo to be simplified and modernised.

Style Guide Snippets

A striking, geometric serif typeface that displays the brand’s nostalgic yet future-facing personality.

A clean, bold, and versatile sans-serif typeface that is accessible and legible for various readers.

An earthy and cosmic color palette that conveys the universe's grounded essence while highlighting its futuristic, expansive nature.

World Building

Our narrative-led approach helped us to start visualising the world of Bitcoin Trading Cards, and imagine what the brand’s universe looked like across different areas: atmosphere, architecture, apparel & anatomy/animals.

Takeaway

Since our branding exercise the brand is now using the graphic base to expand its world and create experiences for its patrons through conference features and an ever-expanding product line.
